Baby walker, How early?

It is said that walkers are made for infants between four to six months (4-6 months), but experts have proven it is best to put your baby in a walker at around six months, as they would have been able to hold their head up, have their feet touch the floor and sit up on their own.

This is contrary to what I experienced with my son, as he loved his walker when he started using it at about five months old. He was able to roll over on his own and hold himself up with assistance. I had to regularly sit him up when he tips over. Then I later device a means of holding him firm much longer, at that age I had to use small pillows to hold him firm by the sides, And also place a pillow at his front too so he won’t hit his head on the toys. At a point he tiptoes, but later got his legs firm on the floor. Then with time he could stand on his own in the walker without falling forward, and he was able to push himself, this helped him to develop his lower body strength. He started walking at ten months old. Before he clocked one year old he would lift his legs up and tries to come out of the walker all by himself. At his first birthday he was already walking around playing.

You can probably wait till your baby is sitting up pretty well on their own as they would by then have a good upper body posture and positioning. I read that it is best to wait till your baby is about 7 or 8 months before putting them into a Walker, due to slow development, in being able to walk, and that it could also ruin their joints later on in life. That walker promotes abnormal posturing and positioning, delays development, increases risk of injury and promotes extension of the body and that it’s not recommended due to the impact on the legs, as the child would end up tiptoeing instead of placing their feet firmly on the floor.

I used walker for my child and it didn’t result to any developmental issues as he had great posture and started playing football at an early age.

Precautions to take when using a walker:
  • Do not let baby roam in a walker in the room alone, while using a walker, the child should be closely supervised.
  • Remove any protruding objects or anything in the gang way, there should be no objects or furniture that the child's height while using the walker can go under.
  • Baby gates should be installed and the gate ought to be closed when your baby is using the walker in order to block any staircases or lower place, as the child may accidentally fall from a stairs while in the walker.
I really don't think there is a perfect month for a baby to start using a walker since all babies develop differently and at different pace.
